Cataract Surgery Philippines

Cataract surgery is for people with reduced visual function due to lens opacity.

There are two ways to remove a cataract. First is extra-capsular cataract extraction or ECCE, wherein a conjunctival or corneoscleral incision is created with subsequent extraction of the cataractous lens followed by artificial lens placement and suturing. Second is Phacoemulsification, a technique wherein the cataract is emulsified through a small corneal incision using a phaco machine. This procedure is faster and recovery time quicker.

Both procedures can be done under topical anesthesia or under general anesthesia. Both can also be done on an out patient basis. When indicated, the procedures will be done in St. Luke's Medical Center, the only JCI accredited medical center in the Philippines.

Follow-up

Follow up is one day and one week post-op. Later follow ups can be made with the local ophthalmologist.
